Preparing Eswatini’s Youth Employment and Entrepreneurship Project

Eswatini’s Youth Employment

Aligning Skills Development with Eswatini’s Green Economy

CEI supported preparation for the Youth Employment and Entrepreneurship Project in Eswatini through a rapid assessment of the country’s Technical and Vocational Education and Training system. The work focused on how national skills development can better align with green-economy priorities and energy sustainability goals.

The assessment was designed to accelerate the Skills for Youth Employment and Entrepreneurship in Eswatini programme by identifying workforce bottlenecks that could limit growth in renewable energy and sustainable agricultural technologies. It mapped emerging green job opportunities and examined how traditional vocational training could respond to sectors such as solar photovoltaic installation, biomass energy, and climate-smart entrepreneurship.

Turning Green Skills Gaps into Practical Interventions

CEI reviewed the relationship between national energy policy and existing TVET provision to identify priority skills gaps. Stakeholder consultations brought together government, private-sector green technology firms, and environmental organisations to build consensus around green curriculum needs and practical pathways into emerging occupations.

The assignment developed proposed “quick wins,” including pilot certification approaches for renewable-energy technicians and regional knowledge exchange on sustainable-energy entrepreneurship. It also considered wider institutional reforms, including options for a National Training Authority with responsibility for green skills quality assurance and a National Training Fund that could encourage private-sector investment in green apprenticeships and technology training.

Together, these recommendations provided a framework for helping young people enter the sustainable energy economy as both skilled technicians and entrepreneurs while strengthening the institutional systems needed for a more inclusive green transition.
